This led  to vast confusion - the same weight is often referred to be two different  names, design features often vary from one face to another, and so on. In  the early 1980s, Linotype remedied this situation by redrawing the entire  Helvetica family. Differences in alignment were corrected, subtle features  were made consistent from one face to another, and all the weights and  widths were designed to work together as one family. Type historians have called Walbaum one of the most  important vehicles of typographic expression in the German language during  the nineteenth century; it was very popular for setting poetry. Günter  Gerhard Lange designed Berthold’s version in 1975, basing his adaptation on the 16-point cutting of the original. Viva is a multiple  master typeface with weight and width axes that allow variations of Viva to be generated by the user. Viva’s weight axis can be thought of as a shadow  axis as the weight increases, the design casts a longer shadow in a weight range from light to bold. Viva’s width axis ranges from condensed to  extra-extended. The display possibilities are essentially unlimited; the  generated variations allow for legible copyfitting in advertising, book  titles, posters, and any display material that needs an original look. The Spencerian style, named after Platt Roger Spencer, a late-nineteenth-century calligrapher, teacher, and copybook author, is an Americanized version of English roundhand. It is signified by the abundance of flourishes and curlicues in the capital letters, and the steep incline  of the lowercase. Poppl-Residenz has flowing ascenders that lean heavily to the right. Poppl’s flamboyant  calligraphic style is not apparent in Poppl-Pontifex, although some of his  stylistic preferences are evident, for instance, in the open-bowled R Based on inscriptional letterforms, Poppl-Pontifex is a lively and friendly text  typeface that makes a good alternative to old style Roman typefaces; it is  distinctive without being trendy. It first appeared in a limited edition of the book The Passion of  Perpetua and Felicity, for which the typeface was named. The italic form  was originally called Felicity. Perpetua’s clean chiselled look makes it an excellent text typeface, giving sparkle to long passages of text; the  Perpetua capitals have beautiful, classical lines that make this one of the finest display alphabets available. Thus,  the letters are narrower than the classical forms and their weight  heavier.” Octavian is a fine book face and works well for other text  settings that are less demanding, such as magazines and brochures. Berolina means “from Berlin” and the name was probably occasioned by the erection of the Berlin Wall;  Berolina was the name of a 1930s typeface from the Wöllmer foundry, thus  the name New Berolina. It also is slightly  condensed, with no curved lines on the outsides of the characters; only the inside shapes, or counterforms, are curved.
